"Dirty Dozen" are known to adversely
affect virtually every system of human
body and may have immediate effects
or a dormancy period of up to 30 years
. According to statistics and medical
research from 1999 alone, over 66%
of all deaths in the county where Mission
is located, were caused by ailments
related to chemical contamination and
exposure
. Contamination levels in the area
surrounding the Helena Chemical Plant
have been reported to be 100 x's higher than allowable limits
. In 1980, the Helena Chemical Plant was labeled a “Superfund” by the EPA - targeting it as a clean-up area for
“real and threatened chemical releases"
. At least 61 of the chemical companies
claimed to be most responsible for national contamination receive revenues of “more than $2.8 trillion and profits of nearly $190 billion during 2006 alone
. In 2006, elevated levels of 54 different
volatiles and chemicals were recorded in
and around the Helena Chemical Plant along with several cancer clusters and other rare diseases
. In 1980, 15 years after production had
ceased and relocated to Bhopal, India,
the EPA found that DDT existed at the
Mission site at a “billion x's normal
levels"
. Women in the Mission area have
experienced miscarriages at a rate at least
7 x's the normal rate
. DDT is known to target the reproductive
